42% of Homeowners Believe Trump Would Be Best For Keeping Home Values High, While 35% Believe Harris Would Be Best
For homeowners, keeping values high is typically a good thing because much of their wealth is tied to the equity they have in their home.
Roughly two in five (41.6%) U.S. homeowners believe Donald Trump would be best for keeping home values high, while 35.3% believe Kamala Harris would be best.
The survey data in this report is from a Redfin-commissioned survey conducted by Ipsos in September 2024. The survey was fielded to 1,802 people aged 18-65. This report focuses on the 805 homeowners who answered the following question: Regardless of who you plan on voting for, which candidate do you think will be best for keeping home values high? Respondents could select Kamala Harris, Donald Trump, other candidate or I don’t know.
For homeowners, keeping home values high is typically a good thing because much of their wealth is tied to the equity they have in their home. But one-third of Americans don’t own a home: In the same survey, we asked that group of people about which candidate they believe would be best for their ability to afford a home. Nearly half of U.S. renters believe Kamala Harris would be better for making homes more affordable; 31% believe Donald Trump would be better.
Additionally, nearly one-third of renters say housing affordability is a top-three issue when it comes to their presidential pick, compared to just 17% of homeowners. Homeowners were most likely to cite the economy as a top-three issue when it comes to their presidential pick, according to the survey, followed closely by inflation.
