Why I Joined Redfin: Andrea Mayhew
Andrea Mayhew is a Redfin Premier agent who serves buyers and sellers in Vancouver, WA. She joined Redfin in September 2024 from John L. Scott and has flourished under Redfin’s model, even bringing her husband and business partner, Jon Mayhew, on board to form The Mayhew Team. We caught up with Andrea to hear more about her experience at Redfin so far.
Tell me about your career up until now and how you got into real estate.
I got into real estate seven years ago. I was about to hit a big milestone birthday and had a “what am I doing with my life?” kind of moment. I worked in corporate banking at the time, and I had helped a lot of clients who were real estate agents. They’d often chat me up and always said I’d do well in the industry, which intrigued me enough to make the big switch. I chose a small family brokerage to start because I wanted to try a different experience from the corporate environment I was used to. They gave me a ton of hands-on learning and great training, and eventually I worked my way up to bigger-name brokerages. Most recently I was at John L. Scott, where I had a team with my husband Jon, who is also an agent.
What brought you to Redfin, and what made you decide to join?
After several years in the traditional world, I was ready for something new. I still wanted that big-name brokerage, but needed more support and more consistency in my business. I started seriously considering Redfin last year when the market was getting slower and I was having a harder time bringing in new clients. I’ve never loved the marketing aspect of real estate – it’s just not my forte. I find social media to be so overwhelming, and when everyone has a cousin who is a realtor, it’s exhausting to constantly sell yourself and say “choose me instead!”. I’m an agent because I love helping people, and I recognized that Redfin could help me do more of that by handling some of those marketing tasks and providing great leads and better support.
Another reason Redfin appealed to me was the consumer technology. Even before I moved to Redfin, my husband and I would use the Redfin app with clients because it was so much better than anything else out there. We’ve always really marveled at it. It really is so good. And that’s not even getting into the great tech that’s built for us as agents.
What were your goals when you started at Redfin? Were you able to accomplish them?
When I set my goals, I aim super high so that if I even come close, I’m happy with myself and how much I’ve done. Ultimately I want to close 10 deals a month, and I’m well on my way to reaching that. During the winter, I’ve typically sold 1-2 homes a month. Since joining Redfin, I’ve been doing three times the volume in the dead of winter, so I’m really happy with that.
How has being at Redfin changed your outlook on your real estate career?
I definitely feel with Redfin I’m able to help more people and get in front of more faces. I love that because ultimately I’m a people person. I feel like my future is more secure here, too. When I set lofty goals, I know Redfin’s leads and support will help me hit them. It’s also great knowing that there’s so many more roles at Redfin that I may be interested in doing in the future. There’s just more possibilities that are open to me here.
What advice would you give to other agents considering joining Redfin?
Well, I’ve already recruited my husband to join me as a team at Redfin! I’d been trying to get him to join since I started, but he was pretty resistant at first. Going to my market’s holiday party last year changed his perspective. Everyone was so kind and welcoming, and nobody tried to get the intel on his business and start comparing themselves, which is really common in real estate. Then once he heard Redfin was building teams, he was sold because we could be The Mayhew Team again.
Ultimately, I’d say this is a great opportunity for agents who are adaptable and thrive when they’re busy. I can get a showing request and be booked within an hour. The great part is you’re not alone – you’ll always have people behind you to support you, guide you, and make sure you succeed.
